Introduction
HUGS marks a groundbreaking development in neural rendering, particularly in its application to animatable human figures. This technology stands out for its ability to process a monocular video with as few as 50–100 frames and rapidly (within about 30 minutes) learn to differentiate and animate a human avatar from the static scene. The technology leverages 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) to achieve this feat, representing both the human figure and the scene using 3D Gaussians.

Technological Breakthrough
The core innovation of HUGS lies in its ability to render human figures and scenes with remarkable speed and accuracy. Traditional photogrammetry methods, while effective for static scenes, struggle with the complexity of animating freely moving humans. HUGS addresses this challenge by allowing the 3D Gaussians to deviate from standard human body models like SMPL (Skinned Multi-Person Linear Model), thus capturing intricate details like clothing and hair that are not modeled by SMPL. This advancement not only improves the realism of the avatars but also significantly accelerates training and rendering times — achieving 60 frames per second (FPS) rendering speed, which is about 100 times faster than previous methods.
